Levi's Advert

Denotation
This is a Levi's Jeans institution advert. This company sells jeans and clothing products and the advert is showing the 64th anniversary of the company, through a grayscale/black and white themed photo. The lighting and the focus is directed mainly at the two characters in the centre. This is a long shot, so that a frame could be seen as the Mise en Scene.

There is a young boy who appears to be 'buttoning' up ( supposedly) his father's shirt. The background behind, is of a bed and a window, this shows its in the home. In front of them, there is white bold, block writing saying ' EVERYBODY'S WORK IS EQUALLY IMPORTANT.' This is the slogan of the brand.
Above that there is a logo, with a trademark sign.

Underneath, there is a second part to the frame. This is a picture of the same grayscale/image but of different characters, with probably no expression on their faces. The same is with the lighting, where the focus is drawn to the centre of the characters. This is a long shot. There is a broken shattered window in back and a messy outside background. The same logo is appeared in the front, with the slogan at the top.

The characters are three people, one of them looks older than the two and they are together, standing. They are wearing jeans and a long top each.

Connotations
Both images connote work and quality. For example the second picture may relate to the first as the second image may appear to us as being the 'makers' of the jeans. These 'makers'/characters look worn out. That is the their part of the 'work' as said in the slogan. Then because of their hard work, it has produced a good quality brand for the above frame.

The above frame is showing how everyone, together produces the brand, whether it be the consumer, the maker, the manufacturer etc. The brand is simply appreciating the fact that everyone has helped the produce.

Coca-Cola Advert

Coca-Cola is a worldwide company, that produces a drink. It is approximately over a century old and since, it has produced many moving picture adverts. In this essay, it will analyse one of the many specific points which make up a meaning to this advert.
Denotations
There are two military officers, guarding a barrier of some sort. Each have thick, heavy weighted militant uniform, which in turn shows sweat and dust on their faces. The two uniforms are different and that represents two different parties or nations. They are set in a desert, which there is nothing apparent apart from two shacks.
Representation
The two men, as we can tell, represent two nations because of their facial expressions in comparison to each other. Their faces show enemity and hatred as well as keenness or alertness towards the others' actions. The use of the sword in the frame (mise en scene) represents, that they may need it. A sword is a weapon for killing and if either has to carry, they may pose a threat to eachother.
Narratives
Two men who are guarding their boundaries by strolling up and down the boundaries, in a hot and deserted environment. One pulls out a coke, with a diegetic sound of a bottle opening, which the other hears. The officer pulls out another coke for the other officer. They extend the barriers line by rubbing the line out on the ground and passing it through there. The line is redrawn with the others' sword in the sand.
Meaning
I think the meaning of this advert links to its slogan 'open happiness'. It is trying to show that a moment of time of yourself enjoying coke can bring you together to common terms with your enemy. This shows that a simple product, Coca-Cola has the ability to smoothen rough relationships and bring people together.

Images...Explained

These images that I will be analysing are to do with perspective, feeling, emotion and the 'message' that is supposed to be coveyed. I will talk about why the media manipulates images intentionally to create a 'feel' to the image, as we do learn that the media is very controlling and biased.

These images are contrasted to show different lifestyles around the world.

Times Square, New York and Las Vegas

These pictures are professionally taken from New York and Las Vegas in a famous place called Time Square (for New York). We need to understand some basic background information about the place or society, however not this time.. Pictures in today's day and age can instantly give away stereotypes of places and people etc.

Colours

The colours used in this photograph are wild, vivid and extravagant mainly to show the range of colours used in Times Square and Las Vegas and to show how it feels around so much colour. These bright colours can connote many different things to the human mind or the person who takes the first glance. To me and many other people, these colours can connote :

* Expense
* Happy
* Attractive
* Eye Catching
* Interesting
* Changing

So already the media has shown the picture in such a way that we feel that Times Square and Las Vegas is a financially rich place, happy place, attractive place, great to look at, interesting. However, this may not be the case but the media wants us believe them.

Lighting and Focus

Lighting and focus can add meaning and perspective to an image and as well as importance. In this picture the lighting is unique because all the lighting is supplied by the surrounding and the photographer has not to make any changes, to show the light show in Times Square and Las Vegas.

The focus is one of the major key points in this photographs because there are people standing in the middle of the place and watching the world go 'by'. So therefore, all of the focus will be on the herd of people in the middle showing how fast time can fly by around them.

The blurred taxis and cars and other surrounding people are simply done to show how fast paced Times Square and Las Vegas are. This effect is done in many famous photographs just to show speed.

Meaning

Overall, this picture shows that this place it has taken a photograph of is a happy and cheerful place with a lot of lighting surrounding it and it's fast paced. The viewer only thinks this because the media has subliminally coveyed this through technology, colour, feel and emotion.

 India

These pictures is professionally taken from a place in India. This picture is showing a particular feeling and is depicting it through emotion.

Colours

The colours used here are monotonous, they are used in grayscale. Normally grayscale connotes depressing subjects and dull images. So, therefore the media has purposely used poor people as a subject (normally not happy people) and used them with a comparative grayscale to help show what a poor condition it is.  So at a first glance you will notice that it's:

* Gloomy
*dull
*miserable
*helpless

So the media is subliminally showing us that this picture is a sad image.

Lighting and Focus

This picture has no sufficient supply of lighting. This is done purposely, purely to show that this picture should not have anything happy to do with light and therefore showing us the 'dark' side of the pictures.

The focus is a key point for these pictures as it mainly focuses on the subject of people. They are showing the critical conditions that these people are living in, they are conveying the message of the people. They are showing what the subjects are and how they feel about it. With this element you automatically think that you feel 'sorry' for them.

Meaning

The meaning of these pictures are very powerful, they have connoted so much through the human mind simply by glancing at it for only a millisecond. This is purely the job of the media, the photographer they have altered the unbiased viewpoint to be a biased one.

So altogether this picture is a picture of sadness.
